It's far better than having to step, swat, squish or even wave 'em away those and clean up the mess afterwards and quite effective on ants crawling on the floor (just wipe the zapper face around the floor where the ants are crawling and you'll see and hear lot of popping and crackling) and swatting the no-see-ums and skeeters (just wave the zapper around you and hear the satisfying pops...). I don't get bitten as much, using this zapper. I've even developed a technique for zapping flies on surfaces (floors, counters and tables).... By Postlapsaria I live in a very old house out in the countryside and I constantly have problems with flies and moths in my bedroom/office, particularly at night when they somehow get in here from outside after being attracted to the light. I sealed off all the cracks I could find but night after night I'd be sitting at my computer and a giant moth would suddenly fly into my face. When I first started looking at insect traps I thought paying ~$40.00 for a small indoor fly trap was ridiculous, but after trying all sorts of flypaper traps and other things to no avail I splurged and bought this, hoping to finally be rid of the issue. So, am I rid of the issue? Sort of. The first thing that happened was I realized I needed to order more glue boards for the trap, bringing the total purchase cost to $55.00 for a device that looks like it should cost about $12.99 at Wal-Mart. After the first two nights, the glue board was full...and it only had 4 moths on it. But due to the large size of the moths and the fact that they flap around and plaster the sticky side with dust from their wings, all of the sticky surface was either filled by the size of the four moths or was no longer sticky due to all the moth residue coating it. So I ordered the extra glue boards, which really should have been included with the original fly trap, and tried again. It more or less succeeded in doing what it was supposed to: catching the flying insects in the room. It works much better with all the lights off so the fly trap is the only light source apart from a TV screen or computer monitor; I haven't had much luck with it when the lights are on or when it's daytime and there's light coming in through the windows. Something else I should mention: one night while working on my computer I was confronted by a gigantic fly buzzing around my face/ears/head that would circle the room endlessly but never land so I could swat it. I plugged the fly trap in, turned off the lights and waited...for the first 20 minutes or so the fly kept buzzing around the room like crazy, annoying me no end, until finally it flew over to the fly trap and stuck. I felt very pleased and triumphant and went to inspect the trap; the fly was buzzing like crazy, all of its legs stuck to the glue board. Then by the time I walked back to the computer the fly trap was empty and the fly was buzzing around the room once more. This was on a fresh glue board, so there's no excuse for why it couldn't hold the fly there. All this being said though, it does still continuously attract and trap moths, flies and gnats when no other trap will. It just seems rather overpriced, especially considering the dubious quality of the glue boards. For the most part I'm glad I purchased it though, even if I wish it had cost less. 31 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Great for household use! By Linda Lou Very handy. It catches dozens of pesky little gnats, fruit flies, etc., that I didn't even know I had. And house flies and small moths. When the sticky board is fairly well covered with "catches", you need to change the board for maximum effectiveness. It uses UV (ultraviolet) light to attract the flying insects. So, it's best not to place it in a brightly lit area. Also, the "UV" output of the bulb diminishes over time, even if the light bulb is still lit. So, replace the bulb at the beginning of the season. I have two, one in a dark hallway near an exterior door, and, one in my kitchen. The kitchen one does its job mostly at night, as the kitchen is pretty bright in the daytime. Very good quality, sturdy and well built. It is loaded with nice features, such as an LED flashlight (detachable), rechargeable battery and LED "zapper on" indicator. By Pj I must say this swatter does feel more sturdy and better constructed than any other of those swatter sold on amazon. Unfortunately the electric grid was not working, it wouldnt zap anything. I received a defective unit but amazon quickly refunded my money. Pros: + Violet LED light to attracts mosquitos. Better than normal halogen light bulb + LED flashlight in bottom base is bright and worked well. You can disassemble light from zapper and it will still turn on. +Sturdy construction + Rechargeable built in battery with collapsible prong outlet, no wires! +Does not smell like lead Cons: -Electric grid was DOA -Zapper head a little smaller than others I bought a 2300 volt zapper and it does not instantly kill "normal" sized flies, it stuns them and they fall on the ground. Well, the flies we have in Boston are apparently abnormally large, because they're larger than the spaces in the protective netting, and so never hit the electric part. We returned the item.
